REVISED Like "Fried Green Tomatoes," this novella explores two young women misjudged and mistreated by the edgy residents of a small Southern town. By turns hilarious and sad, Daph and Normal, who is anything but, fight back after Normal the newcomer is treated like a freak. Which she is, till you get to know her. Shortly after the Twin Towers in New York were bombed, tough beauty-queen Daph befriends Normal who has jumped from a chicken truck near the store where Daph works, and the rural war on terriorism begins in earnest.

"Troublesome Creek" by Janice Daugharty is a novella that covers a lot of interactions between the rebellious but pretty Daff and the tomboyish and friendless Normal. Normal and Daff met when a big truck carrying chickens pulled into the parking lot of the convenience store where Daff worked and out of the passenger side jumped a girl in combat boots. The trucker drove off and the girl sat down by the gas pumps looking downcast and alone. Daff knew the girl was about her age and had something in common with her because Daff wore combat boots too, just because her parents and others didn't like them. "Ladies" didn't wear combat boots. It takes a while for Daff and Normal to become friends, but Daff realizes that she's about the only friend that Normal has, and since the town is still on edge from the 9/11 attacks, everyone new in town is ripe for suspicion. Normal doesn't dress like the typical young girl and she's loud and a little socially inept, but Daff sees a lonely person who needs some kindness and is willing to accept her as she is and is also willing to take a few risks to help this outrageous young woman. "Daff would have to feed her. She'd never felt so sorry for anybody in her life." (Loc. 310) The townspeople were saying some unkind things about Daff and Normal, but Daff figured they would just have to think what they wanted, because she wasn't going to turn her back on someone in need.
There is another part in this story that made this reader feel very nostalgic and brought some memories back from another time in the area around Troublesome Creek. Daff and Normal were going through some papers and things in a garage near the store one day and found some things that belonged to a family who lived there many years ago. Janice Daugharty's Pulitzer award nominated novel "Earl in the Yellow Shirt" goes back to another time in this same place and what Daff finds is hauntingly written into the story and comes upon the reader so gently but powerfully that it stops you in your tracks if you've read "Earl in the Yellow Shirt", which is a highly recommended book. This is lovingly written into the story.
The lessons that are learned from Troublesome Creek are especially needed today. Acceptance of those who are different and showing some kindness and understanding goes a long way. The willingness to help someone even though others protest shows a good human heart, and reciprocation, no matter how small is always to be appreciated because it might be the best that someone can do.
Troublesome Creek has a lot more to it than I've said in this review, but the lessons written into this story are timeless and right, and I think readers will learn to love Normal and Daff, who live and work by Troublesome Creek.

Troublesome Creek edition by Janice Daugharty Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
This was a very interesting book, and I really enjoyed it.
It was only ok
This book is an Excellent Story about staying true to yourself and following your own "yellow brick road"!
Even though it could use a bit more proof-reading, I HIGHLY recommend it!
I like that it shows the importance of following the lesson of "Do not judge..." with no religion involved.
There is also no sex or foul language.
I had my doubts about this book, but was pleasantly surprised. Good story, interesting characters. Daugherty is a talented writer.
It was a bit difficult to read given the terrible (or nonexistent) editing. Beyond that it pretty much just went nowhere. I kept reading to see where she was going with this odd little story, and odd little characters, but it just randomly ended with nothing having happened and some random people thrown in at the end who were suddenly very important to the story that then abruptly just stopped. Also, as a life long Alabamian living in a rural area not far from both the Georgia and Florida borders, I couldn't tell you what was going on with the supposed southern speech. I was appalled. I have never heard anyone say things that sounded remotely like most of that drivel, and I've worked in some pretty rural areas with some pretty "country" folks. It came across like a parody of "southern".
Well...What can I say. I thought, being that "Fried Green Tomatoes" was used to compare it to, it would be a really good book. It wasn't. It does teach about judging others because they may act or look different. But it really wasn't good. I felt the author was just pulling things out of a hat to see what would fit and then it was like the author just wanted to finish it and left things in a mess. I tend to pick books that are different and try not to be too picky as I have found many really good books by accident that way. This book was not what I expected and the rags to riches storyline totally unbelievable and not played out too well. There was no real growth of the characters and some were just thrown in at the end to further the judging others storyline. I am not recommending this until you need something to do on a rainy day and want to waste a few hours.
There's a lot of editing that needs to be done in this book. Honestly, that's what took it from a 4 star read to 3 for me. The needed proofing drove me nuts the entire time I was reading it, and really took away from the story. But if bad grammar/poor spelling/left in editing notes don't bother you, then I recommend this one!
The characters are a hoot. Actually, one of them, Normal, tends to "hoot" a lot. I didn't like her at first. I couldn't figure out why she was sticking around Troublesome Creek. But the kindness that Daff shows her is something that she hasn't had in her life in a long time. So, duh, that's why she's there.
The similarity to Fried Green Tomatoes is small. They both have misfit/outcast female characters that everyone figures are lesbians. They are both in the south....Yeah, that's about it.
This is not the best Janice Daugharty that I have read. Not even close. If you want an amazing book by Daugharty try Heir To The Everlasting. That was a fantastic book. Blows this one out of the water. But for a quick, entertaining read, this one is pretty good.
